Tamil Nadu Emerged as the Most Popular Tourist Destination in India

According to the India Tourism Statistics 2021 report that was issued by the Union ministry of tourism, Tamil Nadu has emerged as a leading tourist destination by topping the country in tourist arrivals in the year 2020. This news was announced in Chennai.

The state is expected to receive over 140 million domestic tourists in 2020, which would place it in the top spot for domestic tourist visits and give it a share of 22.9 percent of the total visits expected in 2020.

The state of Tamil Nadu (TN) had 1.23 million tourists whereas the state of Maharashtra had 1.62 million. According to the report, Bangladesh, the United Kingdom, and the United States were the leading source markets, contributing a combined total of 45 percent to the total number of international tourists that visited India.

The Chennai International Airport served as the point of entry for 6.6% of the total number of international visitors. Chennai was chosen as the preferred port of entry by 52.5% of tourists coming from Sri Lanka, 22.5% of tourists coming from Singapore, 20.4% of tourists coming from Malaysia, 18.8% of tourists coming from France, and 16.8% of tourists coming from South Korea.

The strength of the state’s tourist infrastructure can be seen in the fact that Tamil Nadu is one of the top five states in terms of the total number of hotel rooms that are classed as being in various categories.

In addition, the collection of monuments located in Mamallapuram, which is recognized as one of the state’s five Unesco World Heritage Sites, was ranked as the second most popular centrally protected ticketed ASI monument among domestic tourists and the fifth most popular among international tourists.

According to a news release issued by the state government, some of the other well-known ASI monuments in the state that are popular with tourists are the Fort Museum, Gingee Fort, Fort Vattakottai, and Rock Cut Jain Temple at Sittannavasal.

The efforts of the Ministry of Tourism and Indian Embassies Abroad helped to increase the number of tourists arriving from other countries.

The Government of India appointed tourism officers in 20 Indian missions around the world, including those in Australia, China, Canada, France, Italy, Germany, Japan, Malaysia, Oman, Myanmar, Portugal, South Korea, Russia, Singapore, Spain, Sri Lanka, the United Kingdom, Thailand, the Netherlands, and the United States of America which all contribute to footfall.

According to the secretary of tourism, B Chandra Mohan, the state is expected to receive over 140 million tourists in 2020, which places it first in the rankings for domestic tourist visits and gives it a share of 22.9 percent of the overall visits expected in 2020.

In terms of the number of international visitors who came to the state, it came in at a close second to Maharashtra.

He went on to say that the promotion of tourist spots in the state of Tamil Nadu at an international level has been accomplished through active coordination with Indian diplomatic representations abroad.

Kolli Hills, Yelagiri, and Jawadhu Hills are among the lesser-known destinations that are being developed as adventure and eco-camping sites as part of various key initiatives that have been taken by the state government.

These initiatives include a destination development scheme that is aimed at the comprehensive development of destinations in order to improve the experience that visitors have at those destinations.

Over the course of the previous five years, the state has been constantly successful in luring large numbers of tourists from around the country as well as from other countries.
